The AFA’s instructional staff provides year-round professional instruction. Each instructor was specifically chosen because of their specialized background. Our instructors include previous and current professional college and high school softball managers and coaches.
Alissa Smith | AFA Lead Instructor
Alissa Smith’s collegiate career began at Daytona State College in 1990 where she played softball her freshman and sophomore seasons earning her team’s Gold Glove Award her second year. Smith then transferred to Florida A&M University in 1992 where she received her degree in psychology. While at FAMU, she played second base and shortstop helping lead the Rattlers to claim a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) title her senior season. Smith earned the team’s defensive player of the year award in 1992.
Smith coached at the Division I Level for 10 years, serving as an assistant coach at Bethune Cookman University from 1999 to 2005, and at The University of Maryland from 2005 to 2009. While at Bethune-Cookman, Smith helped lead the Wildcats to five straight MEAC championships from 1999 to 2004 with corresponding NCAA regional appearances. In 2005, the team also won the NCAA Regional at Gainesville and advanced to the NCAA Super Regional. Bethune-Cookman won 49 games finishing number 18 in the final Top 25 poll of the season. Smith was also awarded South Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) in 2005.
Smith was the assistant softball coach and recruiting coordinator at Daytona State College from 2010 to 2018 where her responsibilities included working with the offense, the infield, recruiting and overseeing of camps and clinics. While at Daytona State, Smith managed and coached in the travel ball arena. She started a travel ball organization called The Lady Falcons 18U, which she managed and coached from 2010 to 2016. During that time, Smith helped many players get recruited to play in college. She also coached the Lady Renegades 12U for four seasons in 2014.
In addition to working with the AFA, Smith is currently the Assistant Softball Coach at SJR State College. She, along with the Altamonte Fastpitch Academy instructors, are devoted to providing professional training in all aspects of the game. Contact Coach Smith at ASmith@altamonte.org.
Frank has 16 years coaching experience in girls fastpitch softball and boys baseball. Included in that time is 10 years of travel softball coaching experience and achieving national success with two top 10 finishes in USSSA National Tournaments.
Donna has over 24 years coaching experience in girls fastpitch softball including time at Bishop Moore and Masters Academy. She is also a longtime AFA volunteer developing young players and coaching Babe Ruth teams as well as all star teams. A majority of her teams qualify for state and regionals. Donna also has eight years experience coaching travel softball, including college showcases and reaching the World Series multiple times.
Renee has over 25 years coaching girls fastpitch softball. Her experience includes coaching at the high school level as well as travel softball. She also has two years experience in running girls fastpitch softball camps and clinics.
Logan was a four-year varsity softball player for Lake Brantley High School and is currently a Division I player. She also has three years of experience providing private instruction specializing in fielding and hitting.
Kendall was a four-year varsity softball player at Lake Brantley High School. She is a current Division I player in her second year. Kendall has several seasons running youth softball camps, clinics and private instruction, specializing in fielding and hitting.
Lianys was a four-year varsity softball player at Lake Brantley High School and then coached for Lake Brantley High School on the varsity level. Ly (pronounced Lee) played at the college level for St. Petersburg College. She also has two years experience with private instruction, specializing in fielding and hitting.
Erin was a four-year varsity player at Lake Brantley High School. She has two seasons coaching travel softball and one year experience with camps and clinics. Erin also has one year of experience with private instruction, specializing in fielding and hitting.
Carmen was a 3-year varsity player at Wekiva High School. She has three seasons of coaching travel softball and one-year experience with camps and clinics. Carmen also has experience with private instruction, specializing in fielding and pitching.
Kayla was a four-year varsity player at Lake Brantley High School. She has two seasons of experience with private instruction, specializing in pitching.
