Traffic Section / Marine Patrol

Breadcrumbs

Traffic Section

One lieutenant, ten motorcycle officers, and one DUI enforcement specialist are assigned to the Traffic Section.  The Division uses Harley-Davidson motorcycles and ride the motorcycles year-round, except in the most serious inclement weather.

The primary goal of the Traffic Section is to reduce motor vehicle crashes in the City and facilitate the orderly flow of traffic on the roadways.  The section is responsible for investigating motor vehicle crashes as well as conducting selective traffic enforcement within high crash areas and other areas where complaints are received.  Strategies to reduce crashes are centered and formulated through the use of Engineering, Education, and Enforcement.  Crash data is analyzed monthly to identify issues in roadway engineering design, the need to educate motorists, and enforcement strategies.

The Marine Patrol Unit is responsible for patrolling major lakes within the City and enforcing all State Laws and City Ordinances as they relate to marine safety and operations.  As a service to the community, marine patrol officers provide training that stresses boating regulations, safety, and various rescue techniques.  The Marine Patrol Unit is seasonally staffed with officers from various units.  The Traffic Section is responsible for maintaining the readiness of the equipment and scheduling operations.

The DUI enforcement specialist is trained in the latest techniques to apprehend drunk drivers and works at night using a specially outfitted marked police car with video taping capabilities.  The specialist coordinates periodic DUI “sweeps” where additional officers are brought in to focus on DUI apprehension using saturation patrols and DUI checkpoints.  Several times a year, the Traffic Section participates in county-wide operations through our involvement with the Seminole County Community Traffic Safety Team.  MPO Dan Hoover is currently our DUI enforcement specialist and can be reached at DCHoover@altamonte.org.  Dan has been honored by MADD several times for is work in DUI apprehension, and he is one of a handful of Drug Recognition Experts (DREs) in Central Florida.
